Route of contamination

Sweden – Unlabelled GM maize is found in animal feed.

15th July 2009

Lantmännen a Swedish feed company has accidentally sold maize for animal feed contaminated with Monsanto’s insect resistant maize line MON810.

The maize which was bought from a Dutch trader was sold to mainly dairy farmers in Halland (Southern Sweden). Approximately 100 tonnes had already been sold when routine test results, received by Lantmännen on 7 July 2009, identified a contamination level of 3.9%.

Farmers have been asked to return the maize but as yet it is unclear how many will do so. This was the first time, such high GMO contamination has been found in Sweden and it is believed that the maize originated from Poland where Mon810 is legally grown.
