Route of contamination

Germany – unauthorised GM maize (MIR604 and Mon88017) found food and animal feed.

Germany – unauthorised GM maize (MIR604 and Mon88017) found food and animal feed imported from the United States. During 2009 the German authorities notified the other EU member states that they had identified two types of unauthorised genetically modified maize from the United States. The varieties were;
  • MIR604 maize, developed by Syngenta Seeds inc, has been genetically modified to be resistant to western corn rootworm (Diabrotica vigifera vigifera), northern corn rootworm (D. berberi), and Mexican corn rootworm (D. vigifera zeae). This resistance is conferred by the gene mcry3A gene, but this GM plant also contains the selectable market gene pmi.
  • MON88017 maize, developed by Monsanto Company has been genetically modified to contain two novel traits. Protections against the western corn rootworm (Diabrotica vigifera) and northern corn rootworm (Diabrotica barberi) is from the gene Cry3Bb1. Tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate comes from the gene cp4 epsps.
the notifications were as follows:

On 19 January 2009, both MIR604 and MON88017 are identified in pet food (RASFF Notification number 2009.ADC).

On 5 June 2009, MON88017 is identified in extracted soybean meal (animal feed) from the United States. The meal is believed to have been distributed to Denmark, Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, Austria, Czech Republic and Germany (RASFF Notification number 2009.0716).

On 25 June 2009 two notifications were made both identifying MIR604 and MON88017 in pet food for dogs imported from the United States. The dog food is also believed to have been distributed in Czech Republic (RASFF numbers 2009.0815 and 2009.0817).

On 9 July MON88017is identified in extracted soya bean meal from the United States. The animal feed is thought to have been distributed to Latvia, Poland, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria (RASFF number 2009.0896).

*The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) is used by the EU Member States, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland. It was put in place to provide food and feed control authorities with an effective tool to exchange information about measures taken responding to serious risks detected in relation to food or feed.
