Route of contamination

India – Rice contaminated at centre of origin.

On 20 January 2009, The Indian organisation Gene Campaign reported the presence of Bt insect resistant rice in the region of Jharkhand. The GM rice is believed to be a variety belonging to the company Mahyco a subsidiary of Monsanto and has been found in one of the centres of diversity for rice.

Gene Campaign say that Mahyco had conducted field trials of Bt rice in the region but had violating all rules prescribed by the government for such testing, including locating trials in the middle of a farmers field with no protection to prevent contamination; not burning the crop residue after harvest nor the rice plants immediately surrounding the trial which instead were discarded at the side of the field.
